Nets Netting can be used to protect vegetables various ways. It can be run from the ground to a foot or so above it to protect germinating seeds and small plants. It can be placed directly over slow-growing plants–if one remembers to remove and replace it periodically to keep it from getting tangled in the growing shoots. Netting can also be used with support posts to keep birds away from faster-growing plants. The inconvenience, of course, is that unless the supporting framework is quite elaborate and fairly high, one must remove the net to tend the garden. The Bird-X® net listed below, which is made of durable 3/4" polypropylene with UV inhibitors, will not harm birds or small animals. In addition to protecting vegetables, it can be used to protect blueberry and other fruiting bushes from birds, as well as from squirrels, rabbits, and other animals, and similarly to protect peach and other fruit trees from these creatures. |
