Live Traps
We don’t sell above-ground killing traps. Such traps are fine in professional hands; but most of our customers are not professionals, and it’s hard for us to assess the risk involved to pets, children, and even unwary adults. What’s more, live traps work well and can do essentially the same task safely. The Havahart traps listed below have a top-of-the-line reputation with good reason. All models come fully assembled and are easy to bait, set, and release. Their spring-loaded doors have sensitive triggers to make quick, secure catches; the steel-reinforced high-tensile wire mesh construction is designed for a long life and maximum resistance to damage; and the smooth inside edges protect trapped animals. One or more of these traps should be appropriately baited and placed in areas frequented by the animals you wish to catch or along paths commonly used by them. For information about baits and also about how to trap specific creatures–including rabbits, raccoons, squirrels, and woodchucks–go to our home page, scroll halfway down, click on the web site dealing with the appropriate animal, and visit that site’s live trap page. Of the other creatures mentioned in the table below, cats can be baited with sardines, canned tuna, or other fish; chipmunks with sunflower seeds; foxes with chicken; ground hogs with fresh string beans, sweet corn, or cantaloupe; opossums with vegetables, sweet apples, or sardines; rats with cheese; and skunks with cat food.
Moles can be effectively trapped by placing killing traps over their burrows. While not entirely hazard-free, these devices are relatively unlikely to harm accidental victims because they are designed to strike below ground. One of the traps listed is designed for eastern moles, which it kills with a plunger-type action when triggered. The other trap (shown above) catches western moles in the sandy soil they inhabit with a scissors-type action. Both traps come fully assembled with complete setting instructions. |
